Do you remember the spectacular yard model of the Swedish general cargo ship Burma (1952) of which we posted some pictures 10 days ago? If not, feel free to scroll down in our timeline to check it. As we mentioned we noticed that the rigging of the model had some damage while checking out our storage and opened its display to have a better look. The model is generally in a very good condition, but we nevertheless left it to our colleague Frédéric Lebas for some restoration and conservation work. As you may imagine, Frédéric has always a quite lengthy to-do list. Nevertheless, he started his work on the Burma today. Repairing the rigging of the model is not a big challenge for his skills. During the work, has nevertheless noticed some minor humidity damage. This is quite common with objects made of wood, and happens when the ambient humidity where the object stands changes rapidly. The wood then expands or retracts, and cracks can appear in the surface. That is why it is very important to keep any wooden antiques in places where the humidity and the temperature varies very little through time – as is the case in our exhibition and storage areas. The damage on the Burma is actually nothing serious, and will soon be perfectly repaired.
