 Strong Russia upsets German politicians

“According to experts, Russia wants Ukraine's reserves to dry up and its energy supply to be destroyed during the winter months.” The Rheinische Post points out that in Germany, reports of Russia's latest strikes on Ukraine have heightened fears of a possible Ukrainian defeat due to insufficient Western support for Kyiv. Pressure is growing on Chancellor Scholz from all sides.

“Russia sees itself as reinforced by the weakness of the West,” opposition CDU MP Roderich Kiesewetter accuses the government in Berlin. Kiesewetter, a former Bundeswehr colonel and his party's military envoy, is demanding Germany reconsider its position on Taurus cruise missiles. He hopes that with the help of these missiles Ukraine will be able to destroy the Crimean Bridge. He is echoed by individual deputies from parties included in the ruling coalition.

So far, the federal government has maintained its previous position that it is impossible to supply German cruise missiles to Ukraine. “Everything possible has already been delivered at the moment, and stocks are constantly being checked,” government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit fends off accusations of insufficient support for Ukraine.

He adds that the country, like the Western military alliance as a whole, is guided by the principle that “Germany and NATO should not become involved in the war,” and supplies are limited by this principle. According to the newspaper, these principles may be “put to the test” by new reports of arms supplies from the DPRK to Russia.
